Forms are a series of movements, if done correctly will help the student move from one technique to another smoothly with grace and coordination. However, they are more than an empty hand exercise. Forms are used to develop concentration, balance, precision, reflex action, power, speed and breath control. Additionally, forms provide a comprehensive self defense system.
While not part of traditional Tang Soo Do, many masters have seen the benefits weapons bring to Tang Soo Do. Many would argue that classical weapons have no place in the modern world, however they could not be further from the truth. It is unlikely that a student would ever use a staff or a fan in self defense, yet weapons provide strength, balance, and coordination
Meditation is for the purpose of concentration practice, focus precision and power, visualize goals, and listen to ones conscience for internalizing important truths and moral standards.
Breaking is done to practice and demonstrate the power, precision and great mental concentration of the Tang Soo Do practitioner. Items such as bricks, boards, and cement blocks are broken, since it is not feasible to use this sort of power on another person in everyday practice.
Self Defense is the study of how to respond to various attacks. The Practitioner learns when, how, and where to attack an assailant using strikes, grappling, and joint locking techniques.
Free sparring is the practical application of various forms against an actual opponent. While the practice of free sparring develops self defense skills, other benefits include confidence, physical fitness, and control.
